Playing with fire…

It’s not every day you get to play with several thousand pounds worth of kit. Or set a radio on fire.

Having to spend a sunday at work is never fun, even when I’m photographing radio presenters. But when my housemate, and radio presenter/journalist, Ash shows up with a rented Canon 5d mkII and a 24-105 L series lens my day took a turn for the better.

Presenting me with what is near enough three grand of camera, and informing me that he wants some promo shots done was, and pardon the cliche, like putting a kid in a candy store. Chatting over lunch we thought, ‘wouldn’t it be cool if we shot it with a burning radio?’, and rather than dismissing the idea like sensible people, we got ourselves to Argos, bought a radio and began planning.

Now I don’t recommend setting stuff on fire without taking care, so we were of course taking every necessary precaution (including an apprehensive flatmate on standby with a hose), and when we got the right light, we set about lighting up the radio and taking the photograph.

Knowing we only had one chance of getting it right, we had taken plenty of test pictures, getting the composition nailed, and so a couple of minutes later we had a melted radio and, hopefully, the shot.

A touch of photoshop sharpening and a contrast boost later I had the photo you see above. And no radio presenters or expensive cameras were harmed in the making.
